Preparing Your Activities & Lesson Plans

Summer Camp Riding Lesson

As I’ve said before, and I’m sure I’ll say again, working as a counselor at summer camp is one of the best jobs in the world. But despite the common misconception, it’s not all just playing around. There is actual work involved too. Quite a lot of it. Most counselors will be teaching a skill to the kids, often on their own to a group of 20+ rowdy children, and you soon realise that there’s a lot more to it than just turning up and winging it.

So what have you got planned so far? You know what you’re taking with you, and you’ve thought about where you want to travel after camp ends, but what about while you’re actually AT camp? Have you thought about what you’re going to be doing each day, or what you’re going to be teaching (if you’re running an activity that is).

Summer Has Begun!

summer camp boating

I’M AT CAMP! And it is awesome. As always, it is everything I wanted it to be and more.

I’ve been here for just under a week and it’s been so hectic and busy that it feels like I’ve already been here for months! I arrived last Tuesday after a very long journey from London (delayed flights, long queues and lost friends meant it took a little longer than expected), but as soon as we drove through those gates I knew I was home.

A Summer Camp Packing List

Summer Camp Packing List

It’s just 8 days until I fly off to camp for my 5th summer (8 DAYS!!!), which means it’s almost packing time! Obviously I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to take with me for weeks (okay fine, months), especially as this year I’ve decided to challenge myself a bit and take a heaps smaller bag than usual so it’s easier to lug around on my travels after camp. It’s going to be tough to fit it all in!

Knowing what to pack for any trip is always a bit of a guessing game, but trying to pack for an entire summer, especially when you don’t really know exactly what you’re going to need, is almost impossible. So I’ve put together a little list to give you a bit of an idea of the things you’re going to need at camp this summer.

What Are The Kids At Camp Like?

Summer Camp Counselor Kids

I often get asked by family and friends who have never worked at camp and don’t really know anything about it, what the kids who go to summer camp are like. It’s quite a tough question to answer because while there isn’t really one description to cover them all, there is also a very simple answer.

And that answer is that kids are kids. Sure, different countries and cultures will affect some aspects of their behaviours and attitudes, but generally speaking, all kids need the same sort of care and attention, so whether you’re looking after 25 American 12 year-olds, or 12 Australian 8 year-olds (I have also worked at an awesome Day Camp in Sydney), or just babysitting the kids down the street, your job remains the same.

What To Expect When You Get To Camp

Summer camp counselor friends

Arriving at camp for the first time is a very daunting prospect – I remember back in June 2011 when I finally got to camp after about 6 months of waiting, preparing and getting excited, I suddenly found that I was heaps nervous, unusually so actually. I don’t really get nervous about things that much, but for some reason, even though I was so excited to be spending my summer at camp in America, the nerves had also set in… and I think it’s because I really had absolutely not idea what to expect when I got there!

An Update: Only 49 Days Until Camp!

summer is coming

That’s right, according to the countdown app I have on my phone, it’s only 49 days until I fly over to America and end up at Camp Sloane YMCA, where I’ll be spending my summer! And I don’t think I could possibly be more excited! It feels like I’ve been waiting forever for May 26th to arrive, and it’s so close I can almost taste the summer! This time in exactly 7 weeks, I’ll be 2 hours into my flight, probably getting more excited by the second.

What Is Summer Camp?

Summer Camp counselor

So, you’ve read about who I am, and now you know who 3 Adventures are, but what on earth is this ‘Summer Camp’ thing I keep banging on about, and how can you get involved?

Let me explain.

Every summer, millions of American kids leave their homes and families and head off into the woods or lakeside locations to spend the next 1-8 weeks having the time of their lives living with their friends in cabins or tents, doing all sorts of awesome activities, making s’mores (think gooey, chocolatey, marshmallowey goodness) over the camp fire, singing songs, dressing up and generally being a little bit silly.

Hello there!
