If you’ve read the ‘about‘ page, you’ll probably already understand that this is a blog all about my experience working at summer camp in the USA with 3 Adventures. This is going to be my 5th summer at Camp Sloane YMCA, my favourite place in the world, my home away from home, and this year I am heading to camp with the help of 3 Adventures, a US based summer camp agency who have helped me every step of the way with my application and visa process… more about them next time.
First, who am I?
My name is Roo and I suppose the best way to describe me would be as a ‘summer camp enthusiast’. I began going to summer camp in June 2011 and have returned to the same camp every summer since. My first summer, I worked in the office, taught media to the kids (I studied Film at uni, sot that sort of made sense), and was responsible for all the camp’s photos, videos and social media. It was possibly one of the best summers of my life – I’d found a place I felt immediately at home, a place where I could be myself entirely and I made some of my best friends that summer.
I returned the following year as a counselor, living with the Junior girls (aged 10-12), as well as continuing with all the media stuff. And then in my 3rd year at camp I was promoted to the role of Media Director, meaning I no longer lived with the kids and was entirely in charge of the Media department (which consisted of just me!) and all its programming. I reprised this role last summer and even gained a staff member to help me out, which meant I had heaps more time to focus on the making of all our new promotional videos.
Ok, now the introductions are out of the way, on to the second question. What is this blog all about?
As I mentioned before, the agency I am going through this year is called 3 Adventures – they are the ones who sort out my visa so that I can live and work at camp in the USA this summer (if you want to go to summer camp and need help with the whole process, from finding a job through to getting your visa, they can do that too!). This summer 2015 (and in the months leading up to it) I’ll be writing a post every 2 weeks about my experiences at camp – the things that are going on, everything I get up to, both during my working days and on my days off – expects lots of photos, videos, and summer camp silly-ness. Hopefully my posts will help you to understand what life at summer camp is really like, and perhaps inspire you to spend a summer at camp with 3 Adventures too!
Summer camp is a place that I think about pretty much every day, and I’m not going to lie, not being there from September to May is a real struggle. I would spend every day of the year at camp if I could. It’s a place and a job that is probably one of the most important things in the world to me!
So sit back, read away, and enjoy my summer at camp with 3 Adventures!
*Note: I also run another blog called Summer Camp Secrets, which is full of more tips and stories about summer camp life and how you can experience it too.
